Orientation of non spherical prolate dust particles moving vertically in the Earth’s atmosphere

چکیده
Preferential particle orientation has been previously reported for desert dust and attributed on atmospheric electricity (Ulanowski et al., 2007). Depending its strength, the total electric field within layer can: (a) counteract gravitational settling of large particles (b) cause a preferential non-spherical along vertical direction (Fucks, 1958; Ulanowski Both effects change aerodynamics impact radiative transfer. Here, we quantify electrical aerodynamic torques prolate model that is frequently assumed particles. The transport these to only depend influence fields. We provide an analytical approximation calculation mean angle both charged uncharged find fields with strength greater than 60 kV/m are required alignment up 20 ?m in diameter, lines. If moving same speed wind, torque zero requires 1–2 orders magnitude lower strengths.

Morphology-dependent resonances of nearly spherical particles in random orientation.
We use precise T-matrix calculations for prolate and oblate spheroids, Chebyshev particles, and spheres cut by a plane to study the evolution of Lorenz-Mie morphology-dependent resonances (MDRs) with increasing asphericity of nearly spherical particles in random orientation. We show that, in the case of spheroids and Chebyshev particles, the deformation of a sphere by as little as one hundredth...

HIGHLIGHT Adrian Baule and Hernán A. Makse Fundamental challenges in packing problems: from spherical to non-spherical particles Random packings of objects of a particular shape are ubiquitous in science and engineering. However, such jammed matter states have eluded any systematic theoretical treatment due to the strong positional and orientational correlations involved. In recent years progre...
متن کاملSaltation of Non-Spherical Sand Particles
Saltation is an important geological process and the primary source of atmospheric mineral dust aerosols. Unfortunately, no studies to date have been able to precisely reproduce the saltation process because of the simplified theoretical models used. For example, sand particles in most of the existing wind sand movement models are considered to be spherical, the effects of the sand shape on the...
متن کاملInferring the global cosmic dust influx to the Earths atmosphere from lidar observations of the vertical flux of mesospheric Na
Estimates of the global influx of cosmic dust are highly uncertain, ranging from 0.4–110 t/d. All meteoric debris that enters the Earth’s atmosphere is eventually transported to the surface. The downward fluxes of meteoric metals like mesospheric Na and Fe, in the region below where they are vaporized and where the majority of these species are still in atomic form, are equal to their meteoric ...
